Plant Volatiles
Plant volatiles synthesized from various biosynthetic pathways as a part of plant’s active defense strategy against biotic and abiotic stresses is a form of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly utilized in various food, cosmetic and lifestyle industries. VOCs have been a source of olfactory pleasure for human, its essential oils for flavourings, preservatives, and herbal remedies.
Plants send VOCs to different parts as informative signals, guiding the receiver organs to respond in timely manners to various external factors such as insect & pathogen attacks, temperature stress, mechanical damages, etc. VOCs can also be used as infochemicals for intra-species and inter-species cues and signals; to lure in beneficiary insects and pathogens, to repel herbivore species or to warn neighboring plants of incoming attacks.
Over 1,700 VOCs have been identified from more than 90 plant families constituting approximately 1 % of all plant secondary metabolite currently known despite ongoing researches. Numerous VOCs are dependent on proper functions of relevant plant organs and pathogens i.e. Rhizosphere organisms facilitating in-soil VOCs diffusion to absorb specific chemical combinations, plant stomata cells mechanisms on VOCs perception, release, and intake.
